Classic kiddie ride may be headed to Bay Beach

April 27, 2008
Bay Beach Amusement Park may soon add a 1936 classic to the 16 rides it offers.

The city's Parks Committee recently accepted the donation of a Smith & Smith Chair Plane and approved transferring $10,000 from the Bay Beach Development Fund to transport the ride from New York and to refurbish it.

The City Council still needs to approve it. The council meets at 7 p.m. May 13 in the council chambers of City Hall, 100 N. Jefferson St.

The ride could be installed and ready to go by the summer of 2009.

Tina Westergaard of the city's Parks Department described the ride as a miniature version of Bay Beach's Yo-Yo ride. The Yo-Yo seats 32, while the Chair Plane seats just 12.

"Our plan would be to do a little bit of a modification and connect it to an electric engine rather than a gas or diesel engine and downgrade the speed and the swinging and create a kiddy ride," Westergaard said. "It would be a neat addition as a historical ride as well as a kiddy ride. We would add a plaque with the history of the ride."

Transporting the ride probably will cost $2,500 to $3,000, but refurbishing it, including painting the entire ride, could cost close to $10,000, she told the committee.

The ride belonged for about 50 years to Midway Park in New York. The owner is donating it through the National Amusement Park Historical Association, a group Green Bay joined recently, Westergaard said.

Westergaard said she didn't know its value but said the Yo-Yo cost $250,000 to $300,000 back in 1996. Three rides that the city purchased in recent years earned their purchase cost within three years, she said.

The City Council for the City of Green Bay Wis. last Tuesday evening at its regularly scheduled meeting approved the donation of the ride for the Bay Beach Amusement Park so I have begun the process of transportation of the ride from New York to Wisconsin.

Another Update on the Chairplane ride from Tina (Operations Manager-Bay Beach):

Hi Greg,
Good to hear from you! I am in the process of recovering from some knee surgery and
tried to time it for the end of our season ( I had it Sept. 15 and we closed on Sept.
28). Besides wrapping up the end of the season, we are working on the restoration [of the Chairplane]. We
had a meeting last week on site location, plans we need to submit to the State of
Wisconsin for approval, contractor pricing for cement, fencing, etc. We have set a
time line of approx. April 1 to have everything ready for set up as that's when the
rest of the rides start to be put up for the season.
