SANDUSKY

Results of a recent survey affirmed what many coaster enthusiasts have known all along.

Three of Cedar Point's roller coasters were rated among the top in the nation in a survey conducted by the National Amusement Park Historical Association, an enthusiasts' organization dedicated to preserving and documenting the heritage of the amusement park industry.

The association named Maverick the No. 1 Best New Attraction and ranked Millennium Force first in the category of Favorite Steel Roller Coaster, followed by Magnum XL-200, which ranked third among steel coasters.

Just for the kids
By CATHARINE HADLEY

SANDUSKY -- Children will have their own "planet" to explore this year at Cedar Point.

The new Planet Snoopy area will feature seven rides which children ages 3 and over can ride by themselves, according to park director of public relations Robin Innes.

"They're going to absolutely love it. It will be a great area for young families. There will be a lot of laughing, a lot of smiling faces," he said.
Both Snoopy and Uno, the first beagle to win the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, will attend the ribbon cutting at 10:15 a.m. on the park's opening day of Saturday, May 10.

The beagle duo will greet guests from 10:30 to noon. Young guests will be treated to cake, ice cream and T-shirts.

"Snoopy and the other characters will make appearances throughout the day," the spokesman said.

Formerly the Peanuts Playground, the new attraction features miniature monster trucks, a train ride, a teacup ride, a frog-hopper and a rocket ride.

"We think this is going to work out better," Innes said.

Children will still be able to enjoy the Kiddie Kingdom, Camp Snoopy and the Gemini Children's Area.

Nearby, the Joe Cool Cafe will feature kid-friendly favorites such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, kid-sized pizzas, dog-bone shaped cookies and a souvenir Snoopy lunchbox for each young patron.

Innes said the park expands in different ways every year. "For us to be successful, we have to be able to make sure everybody has fun," he said. "We have to make sure it's balanced."

Cedar Point has other new attractions this year, including four new shows; a new extreme sports stadium with rollerbladers, skateboarders and bikers; a new ride called Skyscraper in Challenge Park and improvements to the Sandcastle Suites Hotel.

The Maverick returns this year. Introduced last summer, the roller coaster was named, "The Best New Ride of 2007" by the National Amusement Park Historical Association.

The coaster has a 95-degree, first-hill-drop (five degrees steeper than straight down) and the Twisted Horseshoe Roll looping element.

High gasoline prices might increase the number of families visiting the park this year, Innes said.

"I think that could work to our advantage. We're going to be a lot more appealing than a long-distance vacation," he said. "We're definitely always trying to provide the best value we can to our guests, and certainly the way the economy is in Michigan and Ohio and gas prices going up, that cuts into their entertainment dollar so we want to be as appealing and affordable as we can."

Catering to family-friendly activities is a growing theme at amusement parks, according to an industry insider.

Gary Slade, editor and publisher of the Amusement Today newsletter in Arlington, Texas, said more parks have installed children's sections and purchased licensing rights for characters like Thomas the Tank Engine and the Wiggles.

"Parks are going to continue to always add to their lineup of things to do for the kids," he said.

Cedar Point's new addition should appeal to families, he said.

"I do know that they've put in a number of rides this year that are kid-friendly or kid-oriented, and certainly that's always a good move. It doesn't matter what year you do it. Families are always looking for more options," he said.

"I certainly think that will be well-received by guests at Cedar Point this year."
