SCENIC RAILWAY BACK ON TRACK

08-08-2008

Australasian Leisure Management

The Great Scenic Railway at Melbourne’s Luna Park, one of the oldest rollercoasters in the world, has been reopened after significant restoration works.

The classic wooden coaster, which was recently voted in the top eight roller coasters in the world according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, was built in 1911 and is the only one of its kind in Australia.

The restoration included work on the cable car system and rebuilding a significant section of track. The station platform has also been overhauled with a 60 metre2 painting by artist Mark Ogge.

Luna Park's Executive Director Mary Stuart believes “the Scenic Railway is a fantastic treasure. All who ride in the wonderful carved carriages and are transported to the heights of the Famous Face to then soar through the rides’ dips and bends. We love the ‘Scenic’ and we love hearing its distinctive clackity clack around the track.”
